Now, the Internet is at your fingertips -
literally! Welcome to a world where your mobile phone brings the
Internet to you wherever you are.
Spice Telecom, Karnataka's largest cellular operator, has introduced
a host of new enhanced services, including a new website called
MYSPICE through which Spice subscribers can access the Internet
through the mobile phones they currently use. These initiatives
come at a time when the company's subscriber base has risen to 1.1
lakhs in Karnataka in February 2001.
T. Elango, Vice President, Sales, Marketing and Customer Care, said,
"To thank our 1.1 lakhs subscribers, we are introducing several
enhanced wireless services that will enable them to use their mobile
hand sets to access the Internet in a easy and friendly manner."
Spice subscribers can also enter the MYSPICE website, where they
can personalize the site for themselves and have access to Email
alerts, appointment alerts and an online address book among other
applications. Users can also filter incoming emails and forward
emails. After logging onto the hyperlink http://www.spicetele.com
and clicking on the 'register new user ' link, a user can set up
and customize his own web page with his own specific areas of interest.
Users can also bookmark web pages and access them through the mobile
phone using the Spice SMS service.
Brinda Shekar, Vice President, Operations & IT, Spice Telecom,
added that the WAP services that have been available until now have
not been available to the masses using mobile phones. "With the
MySpice SWAP services, we have been able to inculcate the features
of the Internet with the mobile phone to allow users to access various
WAP sites on the Internet Through the MYSPICE service, our subscribers
can access the Internet with their existing handsets, without having
to invest in a WAP enabled mobile phone."
Through the MYSPICE SWAP service, subscribers can access an exclusive
list of WAP sites from their mobile phone without having to purchase
an expensive WAP enabled phone. By bookmarking their favourite web-sites
at the MySpice web-page, users can access the book marked sites by
sending an SMS message, containing the words 'WEB (space)***' (where
*** is the alias of the URL defined on the site) to the number 555.
The Spice SWAP server will send back a message to the user containing
the links on the WAP site proceeded by link identifiers. To browse
the link, the user will have to reply to the message with the relevant
link identifier in the message body. The details will appear on the
mobile phone screen.
"Other user friendly services we have introduced are the Spice Voice
Services, that allow users to pay electricity bills, book tickets,
deliver flowers, get one's favourite music delivered to their doorstep
and have one's Maruti serviced in case of a breakdown. All the services
we are introducing are for the regular mobile phone users who do not
have to worry about technical gadgetry or have a technology phobia,"
T Elango added.
Another Spice service recently introduced is the MySpice Information
Services where subscribers can check cricket scores, horoscopes, news
and also monitor Jet Airways flight schedules and stock updates. Subscribers
will have to use Spice's Short Messaging Service (SMS) to send messages
to the number 555 to receive a menu of possible codes for movies,
events, horoscopes and weather.
Spice Telecom is a joint venture brand name of Distacom, Modicorp,
AIG and Prudential. The company has laid 1,250 kms of optic fibre
cable in Karnataka.
