Palace In the middle of the chaos around Chittaranjan Avenue in North
Calcutta is a walled acre with a Palladian mansion in the centre.
It has a fountain not unlike the Roman fountains; there are Neptune-like
figures with conch shells, indeterminate water beasts, and four beauties
with a classical urn!
As you wander in, bemused and wonderstruck, you enter a courtyard
topped by a high gallery. The floor is patterned with diamond shapes
and multi-colored marbles, with statues of men and women in togas
carved out of stone. Real birds -- peacocks, scarlet macaws from
Burma, and albino mynahs from Bihar look not in the least inconguous
in thse surroundings.
The rooms themselves are filled with objects d'art from South East
Asia and Europe: including even a plaster Queen Victoria and an
oak one. And in keeping with the name of the place, there is marble
-- ninety varieties of it shipped by the ton from all over the world.
